The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions has recommended a six-month suspension for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) over her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
During Thursday’s plenary session, Senator Neda Imasuen, chairman of the committee, presented the report, stating that Akpoti-Uduaghan was found guilty of all allegations against her for failing to appear before the panel to defend her claims.
Key Recommendations:
- Suspension for six months with withdrawal of salary and security details.
- Formal apology to the Senate for alleged misconduct.
Background of the Controversy
- Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office earlier this year.
- She claimed her motions, especially regarding Ajaokuta Steel Company, were deliberately blocked.
- Alleged that Akpabio referred to her as a “nightclub girl” on the Senate floor, a remark he later apologized for.
Akpabio’s Response
The Senate President has denied all allegations, describing them as unfounded while reaffirming his respect for women.
The Senate will now debate the committee’s report, with possible amendments, before making a final decision.
