Gimme Dat: Ayra Starr breaks record as Nigerian female artist with biggest opening day steams

Wizkid, Ayra Starr ranked among ‘world’s top artistes of 2024’

Nigerian singer, Ayra Starr has broken a new record following the release of her new single titled Gimme Dat featuring Star boy Records boss, Wizkid.

Following the release of the much anticipated single which gained over 851,000 streams on the first day, Ayra Starr now holds the record for the biggest opening day ever for a Nigerian female artist in Spotify.

Ayra Starr teased the collaboration a week earlier in an Instagram video of her vibing out to the tropical-tinged dancefloor filler while watching the sunset before the song cuts to Wizkid singing, “God da–,” which Starr used as the clip’s caption.

Ayra Starr and Wiz first collaborated on “2 Sugar” from the latter’s 2022 More Love, Less Ego album, which was nominated for best Afrobeats at the 2023 MTV VMAs (in the category’s inaugural year); her 2022 hit single “Rush” was also up for the same award.

Both artists have earned Grammy nominations in the best African music performance category, with Starr scoring a nod with “Rush” and Wizkid notching his fifth nomination with his “MMS” collaboration with Asake.
