Nigerian singer Spyro has opened up about a difficult chapter in his music journey, revealing how a star-studded collaboration with Afrobeats heavyweights Davido and Mayorkun in 2018 left him emotionally devastated rather than launching his career as expected.
In a heartfelt interview with HipTV, the 34-year-old singer recounted how he believed the remix of his song ‘Funke’, which featured the DMW boss and Mayorkun, would change his life.
“I had a song back then, and I had Davido and Mayorkun on it. I thought my life was about to change. The song came out and it was big, and all of a sudden I went back down,” Spyro said.
He went on to reveal that after the initial hype, communication with both artists faded.
“I sat down and thought about it because how do you go from working with Davido, vibing with Mayorkun and all those guys, and all of a sudden, they do not even pick your calls anymore,” he added.
The emotional toll was intense, as Spyro confessed to breaking down in tears during that low point in his life:
“There are times where I would just sit down on my staircase back then and I would cry. I had my parents at home that I needed to take care of. A lot of things were just going wrong.”
Despite the disappointment, Spyro persevered. His breakthrough finally came in 2022 with the viral hit ‘Who Is Your Guy’, a song that not only brought him fame but also led to major collaborations with Tiwa Savage and Simi on subsequent tracks like ‘For You’, ‘Billing’, and the 2024 anthem ‘No Gree for Anybody’.
Spyro, whose real name is Olusipe David, is now one of the rising stars of Afropop, proof that consistency and resilience can turn setbacks into comebacks.
