Lorde sent a text message to her fans instructing them to meet her at “the park” on Tuesday. Many fans correctly interpreted her message and flocked to Washington Square Park in New York City.
The 10-acre park in Lower Manhattan was filled with crowds of people as fans climbed trees and lamp posts in an attempt to catch a glimpse of the singer.
Despite park rangers and local police informing the gathered fans that the event was cancelled, Lorde had not even arrived yet.
Around the same time, Lorde took to Instagram stories to address the situation, writing: “Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down. I am truly amazed by how many of you showed up!”
The singer-songwriter then added: “But they’re telling me you gotta disperse… I’m so sorry.”
Earlier, Lorde hinted at her new single, What Was That, in a TikTok video filmed in the same park. She has since announced that the debut single from her upcoming fourth album will be released on 25 April.
Lorde frequently communicates with her fans through text messages. Following her performance at Coachella with Charli XCX, she released a voice memo discussing the performance and revealing details about her new era.
