Nicole Chikwe, the wife of Nigerian rapper Naeto C, has opened up about the emotional toll she suffered following public backlash when their relationship went public 14 years ago.
Speaking candidly on a podcast, Nicole recalled how vicious online criticism nearly destroyed her self-esteem and mental health, as many trolls questioned her worthiness to be with the rap star.
“When our relationship went public, it was a whole thing. I received a lot of vitriol. The rhetoric was that I wasn’t good enough for everyone’s beloved Naeto C. I was called ugly, compared to animals. It was crazy—it was unrelenting and all over social media,” she said.
Nicole explained that the negativity hit her at a time when mental health conversations were not mainstream, leaving her feeling isolated and broken.
“Being on blogs back then felt like the end of your life. It crippled the confidence I had growing up and made me super insecure,” she added. “But I didn’t want Naeto to feel like I couldn’t handle stuff, so I tried to bear it silently.”
Now, over a decade later, Nicole and Naeto C are happily married with children. Reflecting on how far they’ve come, she described their marriage as a form of “revalidation”—a powerful counter to the harsh judgment she once faced.
Her story has resonated deeply with fans, many of whom are praising her bravery for revisiting such a difficult chapter and shedding light on the long-lasting impact of cyberbullying and unrealistic beauty standards.
