Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late renowned gospel singer Osinachi, has been sentenced to death by hanging.
On Monday, Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, sitting in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, delivered the sentence after finding Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide in connection with Osinachi’s death on April 8, 2022.
In her ruling, Justice Nwosu-Iheme stated that the prosecution successfully established its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Nwachukwu was initially arraigned on June 3, 2022, on a 23-count charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF), covering allegations of homicide, domestic violence, child cruelty, and spousal abuse.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including two of the deceased’s children who testified as PW4 and PW5. Additionally, 25 documentary exhibits were tendered as evidence.
In his defense, Nwachukwu testified personally, while his legal team presented four other witnesses and submitted four exhibits.
Before the final judgement, Nwachukwu’s counsel, Reginald Nwali, appealed to the court for leniency. However, the prosecution, led by Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to impose the full weight of the law.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging on count 1. For counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18, he received two years imprisonment each. He was also sentenced to six months in prison on count 10, three years on count 11, and was fined ₦500,000 and ₦200,000 on counts 6 and 7, respectively.
