ASUU gets new president as fresh strike looms

Covid-19: ASUU says it’s unsafe for universities to reopen now

Professor Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, has been elected as the new president of Nigeria’s Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

He also serves as the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos.

Piwuna replaces Victor Osodeke, a professor of soil science from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

Piwuna’s election took place at the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the Union in Benin, where he defeated Prof. Adamu Babayo from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

His presidency comes at a time of uncertainty regarding issues such as the sharing formula of earned Academic Allowances and brain drain, prompting speculation of possible industrial action.
