“I stand by who I am” – Ayanda Mthembu Opens Up About Bullying, Sisterhood and Staying True on Real Housewives of Durban Season 5

Ayanda Mthembu Opens Up About Bullying

Newcomer Ayanda Mthembu is quickly becoming a fan favourite on Season 5 of The Real Housewives of Durban (RHOD).

At 36, the vibrant optometrist, mother of three, and proud twin joined the show in hopes of building meaningful connections—but her journey has been anything but smooth.

In an exclusive interview with Sowetan LIVE, Ayanda got candid about her time on the show, touching on themes of bullying, sisterhood, and self-worth. Despite the unexpected challenges, she says she’s entering the reunion with her head held high.

“I came into this experience hoping to meet mature women and build meaningful connections. Sadly, I was disappointed to see that, just like in parts of my past, some women still resort to bullying,” Ayanda shared.

Ayanda, who has consistently stood her ground with grace, said her biggest lesson has been understanding that bullying often reflects the inner wounds of the bully, not the victim.

“I genuinely hope they find the healing they need,” she added.

The Power of Sisterhood: Ayanda and Her Twin, Andile

One standout element of Ayanda’s storyline is her unbreakable bond with her twin sister, Andile Pieterson. Though some viewers have criticized the twins for “talking too much,” Ayanda defended their dynamic with humor and heart.

“All of us have strong personalities and big opinions – that’s part of being on this kind of show… If you ever sit between us, you’ll get it! It’s definitely a twin thing.”

She affectionately describes Andile as her “best friend” and “mirror,” adding that sharing this reality TV journey with her sister has been a deeply rewarding experience.

Ayanda vs. Nonku Williams: A Complicated Dynamic

Ayanda also addressed her complex relationship with fellow housewife Nonku Williams. While she found Nonku relatable and open in one-on-one moments, she witnessed a different side of her in group settings.

“Within the group, I experienced a very different version of Nonku—someone who, at times, came across as a bully.”

Still, Ayanda remains hopeful that a genuine relationship could be possible between them if Nonku is willing.

She encouraged fans to keep watching the show for upcoming episodes filled with real conversations, genuine connections, and surprising moments that go beyond the drama.
