Nollywood actress Grace Bassey, formerly known as Belinda Effah, has officially joined the United States Navy, a life-changing move that earned her American citizenship.
The 33-year-old star announced the milestone on her social media platforms on Monday, sharing a photo of herself in full Navy uniform. In an emotional post, she reflected on her journey and expressed gratitude for how far she has come.
“Last week, I graduated from U.S. Navy boot camp as a Sailor and took the oath as a citizen of the United States,” she wrote.
“Nigeria raised me, America challenged me, and I stand today stronger and more determined than ever. Thank you to everyone who believed in me. This is just the beginning. In honour of my late father – Naval Cdr. Asido Bassey Effah.”
Grace’s late father served as a commander in the Nigerian Navy, making her decision to serve in the U.S. Navy a touching tribute to his legacy.
The actress, known for her roles in popular Nollywood films, stepped away from the entertainment industry in recent years. Her transformation journey included a spiritual reawakening, during which she changed her name from Belinda, which she said means “beautiful serpent,” to Grace — a name she describes as a gift from God.
“God changed my name to Grace after a divine encounter,” she previously explained. “It reflects a personal rebranding, but not a change in my core values or identity.”
