Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe has publicly shared a deeply emotional moment with her daughter, Michelle, as she reflects on the challenges of single motherhood and the parenting style she once adopted.
Speaking at the premiere of the upcoming psychological drama My Mother Is a Witch, held at Filmhouse Cinemas, Palms Mall, Lekki, on Sunday, the 47-year-old star revealed that she recently texted Michelle an apology for the tough love she administered while raising her alone.

“I’ve been a single mother before I got married. For years I was a single mom to Michelle. Three days ago, I had to send her a text to apologise for the harsh upbringing. I said, ‘I’m sorry, you might think I was too hard, but I raised a vessel for God,’” Mercy shared during a red-carpet interview.
The “Thin Line” actress also recounted a moment that truly struck a chord.
“One day I was calling her, and she didn’t pick. I had to reach out to her friend who told her to return my call. When she finally did, I asked why she didn’t pick, and she said, ‘Mommy, I’m traumatised. I remember you hit a bucket on my head one day.’”
Mercy plays a pivotal role in My Mother Is a Witch, portraying the estranged mother of Efe Irele’s character. The film, written and directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, is set for nationwide release on May 23.
Set in Benin City and London, the film tells a gripping story of generational trauma, emotional silence, and the healing journey between mother and daughter. Actress Efe Irele, who plays a fashion editor returning home to confront her past, also serves as the movie’s executive producer.
“The story demanded a lot of emotional depth, and I fully embraced that,” said Efe.
Produced by Anthill Studios in collaboration with Frame Flix HQ, My Mother Is a Witch also stars Timini Egbuson and Neo Akpofure. It promises a compelling narrative that blends drama, psychological tension, and the search for redemption.
