Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has denied any involvement in the October 2020 #EndSARS protests and the destruction of property in Lagos State.
He made this denial in a video that was presented during his ongoing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday.
During the trial, the prosecution team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Adegboyega Awomolo, called its second witness—an agent from the Department of State Services (DSS)—to continue giving evidence against Nnamdi Kanu.
As part of the proceedings, the court was shown a CD containing a video of an interview conducted with Kanu by DSS operatives at their headquarters in Abuja on July 17, 2021.
In the video, Nnamdi Kanu was asked whether he was aware that his broadcast on October 20, 2020, allegedly incited violence, killings, and the destruction of public property in Lagos State.
Kanu responded by saying that Lagos is not part of Biafra territory, and therefore, any incidents that occurred there should not be linked to him.
Kanu said: “I swear in the name of God that created heaven and earth, I have no hand and I know absolutely nothing in whatever form about the riot and destruction that happened in Lagos during #EndSARS.
“If I have authority over people, I won’t be calling for a referendum. I would have just woken up one day and say let’s create Biafra.”
Meanwhile, the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, adjourned the matter till May 14, 21, and 22 for continuation of hearing.
