Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has affirmed his commitment to the party, stating that he will continue to run under its platform.
He made this known while addressing supporters in a seven-minute video currently circulating on social media.
When asked about the party on which he plans to contest the 2027 elections, Peter Obi responded, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”
The ex-governor of Anambra State also attributed the internal crises within political parties to government interference.
He stated: “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government, quote me anywhere.
We had a problem in our party before, in the past. Yar’Adua was the President. I went to him then; he called the INEC chairman (Prof. Maurice Iwu) and told him I don’t want any problem in any party. We were forced to fix it.
But today, in all the parties, there are problems; these are deliberate problems caused by the system. These are some of the things I want to clean up if I have the opportunity.
Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition.”
He also emphasized that Nigerians must take responsibility for ensuring that elections are free and fair.
This statement comes as Peter Obi is actively involved in building an opposition coalition.
He is collaborating with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai on the formation of a coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu’s bid for reelection in 2027.
El-Rufai, confirming a recent meeting, stated that the coalition, once launched, will work to return Tinubu back to Lagos in 2027.
