Nigerian singer Rudeboy, real name Paul Okoye, has sounded the alarm on the growing recklessness on social media, warning that the obsession with clout and trends could lead to serious consequences.
Taking to his Instagram Story, the music star posted a blunt message:
“Social media is going to destroy a lot of people… you might think it’s just cruise, clout or to trend — your eye go clear.”
While Okoye didn’t mention names, his post follows intense backlash over a viral video shared by controversial artist Speed Darlington, who claimed to have had an intimate encounter with a 15-year-old girl — a statement he later retracted, admitting it was a fabricated publicity stunt to promote his music.
The video sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians calling for his immediate arrest. Although Speed Darlington has since apologized, calling the video a “bad joke”, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has launched an investigation into the matter.
Rudeboy’s warning reflects a wider concern over the abuse of digital platforms and the lengths some individuals will go to gain attention online — often at the expense of ethics, legality, and personal dignity.
His message adds to growing voices within the entertainment industry calling for greater accountability and responsible use of social media, especially as the lines between content creation and criminal behavior continue to blur.
