“Living in New York has been one of the greatest gifts of my life” – Shudufhadzo Musida Wins Most Innovative Style Award, Reveals Plans for Mental Health Project ‘Mindful Mondays’

Shudufhadzo Musida Wins Most Innovative Style

Former Miss South Africa Shudufhadzo Musida continues to shine on the global stage — not just in beauty and fashion, but also in education and advocacy.

The 28-year-old trailblazer recently received the Most Innovative Style Award at the 2025 South African Style Awards in Johannesburg, a testament to her distinct and expressive fashion sense.

Crowned Miss South Africa in 2020, Musida has since become a respected mental health advocate, author, and international scholar. Currently based in New York City, she recently completed her first year of a master’s degree in international affairs at the prestigious Columbia University.

“Living in New York has been one of the greatest gifts of my life,” she told TimesLIVE. “I’m focusing on economic and political development with a specialisation in leadership, innovation and design.”

Despite the distance from her home in Limpopo, Musida remains deeply connected to South Africa and those who’ve supported her journey. She expressed special gratitude to former Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka for helping her achieve this long-held dream.

“I miss South Africa, but being able to study at a school I’ve wanted to attend for the past 10 years has been an unforgettable life moment.”

A Style Icon with Substance

Known for her bold and unconventional fashion choices, Musida revealed that her sense of style has evolved over the years.

“In high school, I loved 1990s bohemian looks — boho chic. I only started wearing ball gowns during the Miss SA pageant,” she said. “My personal style depends on my mood, but it’s always about feeling comfortable. I don’t follow trends. I’m a creative at heart.”

She added, “I draw from different eras to reflect different parts of myself. I’m an old soul but also playful — a tomboy who sometimes loves to dress up.”

Her unique style, rooted in authenticity and creativity, earned her the coveted award for Most Innovative Style — further solidifying her influence in the fashion world.

Miss SA, Mental Health, and What’s Next

Reflecting on her reign as Miss South Africa, Musida called it a life-changing experience that shaped her values and purpose.

“Being Miss South Africa is something I’ll forever be proud of,” she said. “Another highlight has been working with the United Nations Population Fund to promote gender equality, mental health, and reproductive rights.”

Looking ahead, Musida hinted at the return of a fan-favorite project — Mindful Mondays — a digital mental wellness series that resonated deeply with her followers.

“I can’t go into it too much yet, but it’s something a lot of people have been asking me for. So all I’m going to say is — Mindful Mondays is coming back.”

Shudufhadzo’s Message to Young Women

With all her achievements, Musida remains grounded in purpose and passion. Her advice to young women?

“Make sure you know your ‘why’. I love education and constantly strive to be learning something new — so make sure you never get complacent in achieving your purpose.”
