Nigerian pastor Timothy Omotoso has been re-arrested in South Africa, just weeks after he was acquitted of multiple rape and trafficking charges.
The South African Department of Home Affairs confirmed that the 66-year-old leader of Jesus Dominion International Church was taken into custody early Saturday morning in East London, Eastern Cape.
According to National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, immigration officials carried out the arrest, which was supported by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Tactical Response Team (TRT).
“He was arrested this morning around 5 o’clock in East London as he was finishing church,” Masemola said. “The arrest is based on immigration matters. He will appear in court on Monday, and the specific charges will be made clear.”
Omotoso was originally arrested in 2017 and faced 32 charges including rape, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking. Several women—some of whom were minors at the time—accused him of sexual abuse under the guise of religious mentorship.
After spending nearly nine years in custody, Omotoso was acquitted last month of all charges, sparking widespread controversy and public outcry.
His latest arrest is reportedly linked to his immigration status in South Africa, raising questions about how he remained in the country following his acquittal.
Omotoso is expected to appear in court on Monday, where authorities will formally present the immigration-related charges against him.
