The FA has announced that starting June 1, transgender women will not be allowed to play in women’s football in England, in accordance with a recent change in the law determined by the UK Supreme Court on April 16.
The court’s unanimous decision stated that a woman is defined by biological sex in equalities law.
“We understand that this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify, and we are contacting the registered transgender women currently playing to explain the changes and how they can continue to stay involved in the game,” a statement from the FA read in part.
While last month the FA reported 20 transgender women among amateur players, there are currently no registered transgender women in professional football in the Home Nations.
