Ashanti slams Nelly for sleeping through son’s cries

Nelly and Ashanti expecting second child

R&B star Ashanti had some fun at her husband Nelly’s expense in the latest episode of their reality series Nelly and Ashanti: We Belong Together, teasing the rapper for sleeping soundly while their baby son cries through the night.

In a candid and lighthearted exchange, the couple discussed Nelly’s upcoming global Where The Party At Tour, which kicked off in March and will keep the 50-year-old artist on the road for months. While acknowledging that his absence would leave Ashanti, 44, alone with their son Kareem, she jokingly pointed out that not much would change at home.

“It’s just with the baby it’s a lot,” Ashanti said. “I’m trying to understand how is it that you sleep through when he starts crying?”

Nelly, amused by the conversation, admitted he’d heard stories about sleep deprivation that comes with parenting, replying, “Do y’all really be up at night? I heard about it.”

Their son, Kareem Kenkaide Haynes, will celebrate his first birthday on July 18, but for now, Ashanti has been taking the lead in parenting. Nelly confessed in the episode that he wasn’t overly interested in baby care until his son hits major developmental milestones.

“Cause once he get to walking and talking, he with the crew,” he said, hinting that he’ll be more hands-on once Kareem is mobile and vocal.

In an earlier interview with The Shade Room, Nelly referred to his current parenting style as being on “cruise control,” but emphasized his support for Ashanti by ensuring she has help when needed.

“She knows I’m here,” he said. “She knows she has the support. She knows whatever she needs, I provide, and that includes nannies.”

The couple’s playful banter and honest reflections on new parenthood are quickly becoming a highlight of their reality series, offering fans an inside look at their evolving family life.
