FC Barcelona are reportedly leading the race to sign Athletic Club star Nico Williams, with a potential deal now awaiting the green light from club president Joan Laporta.
The 22-year-old Spanish international has expressed a strong desire to join the Catalan giants, putting the Blaugrana ahead of rivals such as Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Chelsea, according to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.
While Williams’ current contract includes a release clause deemed financially achievable, concerns over LaLiga’s strict salary cap regulations have made Laporta cautious. However, sporting director Deco remains confident, having met with Williams’ agent, Felix Tainta, to discuss terms.
New head coach Hansi Flick has personally spoken to Williams to outline his tactical plans, signalling strong intent from the club’s technical bench. Sources add that Lamine Yamal, Spain teammate and Barcelona’s rising star, is eager to see Williams join him at Camp Nou, adding to internal pressure for the deal.
Barcelona has reportedly cooled its interest in Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, making Williams the club’s top attacking target this summer.
The transfer now depends on Laporta’s final financial evaluation and approval, after which Barcelona are expected to finalize the signing swiftly.
