France head coach Didier Deschamps has thrown his full support behind Ousmane Dembélé as a strong contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, citing the winger’s exceptional season with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Speaking ahead of France’s highly anticipated UEFA Nations League semi-final clash against Spain, Deschamps praised Dembélé’s impact at both club and international levels.
“Obviously, this Nations League can bring some elements of response, the Club World Cup too. If I have to choose, I tell you Ous, 100%, of course,” Deschamps told reporters.
“If you ask me about the Spaniards, I don’t think they will tell you the same thing. But obviously, Ousmane, with the season he is having, deserves it.”
Dembélé’s Case for the Ballon d’Or
The 2024/25 season has been a career-defining one for Dembélé. The 27-year-old French winger played a crucial role in helping PSG complete a historic Treble, winning the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France, and—most notably—the UEFA Champions League.
To crown his efforts, Dembélé was named PSG’s Player of the Season, further strengthening his credentials for the prestigious individual award.
Competition From Lamine Yamal and Other Stars
Dembélé is expected to face stiff competition for the Ballon d’Or from players like Lamine Yamal, the Spanish wonderkid who will be in action against France in the Nations League semi-final.
The outcome of international tournaments like the UEFA Nations League and the FIFA Club World Cup could be decisive in tipping the scales for the Ballon d’Or shortlist.
