The Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, has raised alarm over the worsening state of Nigeria’s economy, warning that every major sector is in distress.
Speaking through labour and human rights activist Dr. Auwalu Mudi Yakasai (Danmalikin Kano) at the 51st National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Sanusi painted a sobering picture of the country’s current economic hardship.
“Every sector of human endeavour in Nigeria is battered. The economy, social life, education, health — all are going down,” he said.
Labour’s Lost Voice
The Emir expressed concern that the labour movement — once a powerful force against economic injustice — has become subdued. He recalled an era when unions stood in solidarity with student groups, market women, and religious leaders to resist oppressive policies.
“In those days, the labour movement was the vanguard of the struggle… but today, it seems labour has lost its voice.”
He lamented the skyrocketing cost of living, especially fuel prices, as evidence of how hard life has become for ordinary Nigerians.
Call to Action: Cooperation, Contestation, Confrontation
Sanusi urged trade unions to return to their core principles:
-
Cooperation with authorities as the first step.
-
Contestation when dialogue fails.
-
Confrontation — including strikes — when necessary.
“Confrontation takes many forms. Strike action is just one of them,” he said.
Praise for SSANU Leadership
The Emir, through his representative, commended SSANU President Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim for leading with transparency and inclusivity. He also noted that today’s labour leaders are better educated and more influential, but warned that privileges like air travel must translate into real benefits for union members.
“Comrade is a title I cherish most. It cannot be bought — it is earned through dedication to the struggle.”
A Warm Welcome to Kano
He encouraged SSANU delegates to explore Kano’s hospitality and safety, and called on other unions to emulate SSANU’s model of unity and openness.
