The Federal Government on Monday arraigned former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on an 8-count charge bordering on unlawful possession of properties and money laundering.
Emefiele is accused of illegally controlling 753 housing units located on Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja. The sprawling property reportedly covers 150,462.86 square meters.
Additionally, the former apex bank chief was alleged to have N76.3 million unlawfully held in a Zenith Bank account, along with N2.9 billion and N1.9 billion—amounts suspected to be proceeds of illicit activities.
One Eric Ocheme, believed to be his accomplice, is currently at large.
Emefiele, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges when they were read to him in court.
The court has adjourned the matter for further hearing.
