With Sallah celebrations approaching and heavy rains threatening infrastructure nationwide, the Federal Government has ordered an immediate security assessment of all correctional centres across Nigeria to prevent possible threats and ensure quick responses to emerging challenges.
The directive was announced by the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, during an emergency virtual meeting with senior prison officials, including Zonal Coordinators, Training College Commandants, and State Controllers.
Proactive Steps Amid Festive Season and Weather Concerns
The high-level meeting, held as a precautionary measure ahead of the festive season, focused on strengthening security and preventing potential prison breaks, particularly given the worsening weather conditions and historical risks associated with national holidays.
Spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service, DCC Abubakar Umar, stated that the goal is to protect facilities, maintain order, and ensure the safety of both inmates and the public.
“This is not just about concrete walls and iron bars—it’s about trust, duty, and the safety of every Nigerian. The time for complacency is over,” Nwakuche declared.
Key Directives and Measures
Some of the urgent actions ordered include:
-
Immediate audit of all correctional centres to identify security weak points
-
Heightened surveillance and reinforcement of security at high-risk facilities
-
Removal of vulnerable personnel or weak links in the custodial chain
-
Zero tolerance for negligence, collusion, or dereliction of duty
-
Strict internal accountability measures for lapses or failures
The Controller General also emphasized that any staff member found guilty of security failures would face serious consequences, reinforcing that discipline and vigilance are non-negotiable.
A Call for Unity and Preparedness
The meeting concluded with a renewed call for unity, discipline, and high alertness among correctional staff. Nwakuche urged officers to work collaboratively with other security agencies and the general public to maintain order and stability during the holiday season.
