The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that it is finalising urgent evacuation arrangements for Nigerians stranded in Israel and Iran, following the recent outbreak of hostilities between the two nations.
In a statement released Tuesday night by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government disclosed that Nigerian embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran are actively contacting citizens in the conflict zones to organise a safe evacuation.
“All affected Nigerian citizens are therefore strongly advised to adhere strictly to local security protocols and to contact the nearest Nigerian Embassy or Mission for registration and further instructions,” the statement urged.
The Ministry commended the tireless efforts of diplomatic staff in both countries and assured the public that the welfare and safety of Nigerians abroad remain a top government priority.
“The Federal Government is working closely with international partners and local authorities to ensure the timely and secure evacuation of Nigerians in affected areas,” the ministry added.
Call for Ceasefire and Peaceful Resolution
In addition to evacuation plans, the Nigerian government renewed its call for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Iran, urging both parties to respect international humanitarian law and prioritise the protection of civilians.
“Nigeria stands firm in its support for peaceful conflict resolution and reaffirms its longstanding commitment to regional and global peace and stability,” the statement noted.
Further updates on the evacuation process are expected to be disseminated via official government channels in the coming days.
Background on the Israel-Iran Conflict
The evacuation announcement follows a significant escalation after Israel launched airstrikes targeting around 100 sites in Iran, including nuclear and military facilities. The strikes reportedly killed senior Iranian military leaders such as General Mohammad Bagheri and Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, condemned the assault as a “declaration of war”, warning of a severe retaliation. The Iranian military also signalled that there would be “no limits” to its response.
The intensifying conflict has sparked widespread international concern, with global powers calling for restraint and diplomacy to avert a broader regional crisis.
