“Why Do You Need 7 or 8 Cars?” – Made Kuti Questions Excessive Car Ownership

Made Kuti Questions Excessive Car Ownership

Afrobeat singer Made Kuti has sparked fresh debate online after openly questioning the need for excessive material possessions, especially multiple cars.

In a recent interview with Pulse, the grandson of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and son of music icon Femi Kuti shared that he has no interest in collecting material items, stating that his values stem from a deeply intentional upbringing.

“I’m the kind of person who just does what he wants. Maybe my dad was very clever with how he raised us,” Made said.

The Grammy-nominated artist went on to express that while others may find happiness in accumulating luxury assets, he personally finds it unnecessary, particularly when it comes to car ownership.

“How many cars do you need to drive? I genuinely don’t understand why you need 7 or 8 cars,” he continued. “They are depreciating assets. In the next couple of years, they will depreciate.”

Made clarified that he isn’t condemning those with different lifestyles or aspirations but emphasized that his values are rooted in simplicity, purpose, and intentional living—not materialism.

His comments have sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some praising his minimalist mindset and others defending wealth as a symbol of achievement and comfort.

Whether you agree or not, Made Kuti’s perspective adds an interesting layer to ongoing conversations around wealth, values, and what it truly means to live well.
