Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi has shared his thoughts following his team’s heavy 4–0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Argentine superstar was unable to inspire his side to victory as his former club, PSG, dominated the match with goals from Joao Neves, who scored a brace, an own goal from Tomas Aviles, and a strike by Achraf Hakimi. The result saw Inter Miami crash out of the competition, while PSG advance to the quarter-final where they will face German champions Bayern Munich.
Taking to Instagram after the defeat, Messi reflected on the loss and looked ahead to the rest of Inter Miami’s season.
“Today the Club World Cup ends for us with defeat against the Champions League winners, where there are players I appreciate and that gave me joy to see them again,” Messi wrote.
“We leave with pride to have achieved our goal of reaching the top 16 of the tournament. Now to focus on the MLS and all that is coming.”
Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 after spending two seasons at PSG. While the loss ends their international hopes for now, the 36-year-old forward emphasized pride in their journey and readiness to shift focus to the challenges ahead in Major League Soccer and other domestic competitions.
