England and Chelsea defender Millie Bright has announced her withdrawal from selection for the upcoming UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, citing the need to prioritise her mental and physical health after a demanding season.
In a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram, the 31-year-old revealed:
“This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, but after careful thought and discussions with my team, I have decided to withdraw from selection for the England squad ahead of Euro 2025.
Football has given me so much, and representing my country has always been my greatest honour. My pride and ego tell me to go, but I think the team and the fans deserve more. Right now I’m not able to give 100% mentally or physically.”
According to ESPN, Bright has been contemplating her international future for some time, particularly after stepping back from England’s Nations League fixtures against Portugal and Spain earlier this month, citing burnout. Sources close to the player say the 2023/24 season has been emotionally and physically taxing, with little rest or recovery.
Bright added:
“As much as I want to be out there running through brick walls for England and fighting alongside my teammates, stepping back is the right thing for my health, my future in the game, and most importantly, the team.
It wouldn’t be fair for me to take the place and opportunity away from another player who is ready and able to give everything for the badge and country.”
Bright has been a crucial figure for the Lionesses over the years. She captained the squad during the 2023 Women’s World Cup in the absence of Leah Williamson, leading England to the final. She was also a key member of the team that won the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022.
At club level, Bright made 36 appearances for Chelsea this season, captaining the side to a historic domestic treble, including an unbeaten Women’s Super League campaign and a run to the Champions League semifinal.
Her decision comes as a further blow to England manager Sarina Wiegman, who is already without Mary Earps and Fran Kirby, both of whom have recently retired from international football. Wiegman is expected to name her final Euros squad on Thursday.
England will begin their Euro 2025 title defence against France on July 5 in Switzerland.
