Nelisiwe Sibiya Opens Up on Emotional Toll of Playing a Villain in Ithonga, Earns KZN Film & TV Award Nomination

South African actress and singer Nelisiwe Sibiya has candidly shared the emotional challenges she faced while portraying a villain for the first time in the Mzansi Magic telenovela Ithonga.

Nelisiwe, who plays Zamahlubi Ntanzi—widely known as Zama Ntanzi—revealed that the intensity of viewer backlash caught her completely off guard. Her character, described as a “spoilt brat,” quickly became a target for strong criticism from fans who struggled to separate fiction from reality.

“People took it personal, and they cursed me out even on my pictures,” Nelisiwe told Daily Sun. “They were insulting me because of my onscreen character. They can’t differentiate between real life and the character, and I’m glad I have directors who would make sure I’m okay.”

The 32-year-old admitted that stepping into the role was initially intimidating, especially as harsh comments spilled over into her everyday life. She shared how uncomfortable simple outings, like attending weddings, became as fans reacted emotionally to her villainous role.

However, with guidance and encouragement from the Ithonga directors, Nelisiwe slowly grew into the part — a transformation that has now earned her a prestigious nomination at the Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards.

“It’s so surreal. I’ve been nominated for many awards, even internationally. But this one is important because it’s from KZN, and it shows that I’m recognised where I come from,” Nelisiwe said proudly.

The nomination holds special meaning for her, as it comes from her home province — a region she credits for nurturing and supporting local talent.

“The truth is, the industry is hard, and I’m happy that there are people who have been following me since I started on social media. I’m not going to respond to negative comments. I love people, and I appreciate those who show me love,” she added.

Despite facing negativity from some viewers, Nelisiwe remains focused, grateful, and grounded. Her journey is a testament to resilience, personal growth, and the power of staying true to one’s craft, no matter the challenges.
