Popular Nigerian media personality Toolz Oniru-Demuren has sparked an online conversation by questioning whether children are obligated to care for their parents in their old age.
Posting on her Instagram page, Toolz shared her thoughts on the matter, revealing that many people she spoke with surprisingly disagreed with the idea.
She wrote:
“The amount of people I’ve spoken to that said no to this question surprised me. Is it weird that if I could pick up all my mum’s bills, I would? Likewise, do I expect Chairman and General to look after me? Absolutely to a certain extent. What do you think? Is this too old-fashioned?”
Her post has since sparked mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that children should naturally support their parents in their later years, while others believe such expectations should depend on personal circumstances.
Toolz’s post reflects a growing conversation in Nigerian society about generational responsibility, tradition, and modern independence.
