Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to Benue State, describing it as lacking empathy and seriousness in light of the recent tragic killings.
In a post on his official X handle on Thursday, Obi expressed disappointment that the visit appeared more like a political rally than a condolence trip to a state mourning the loss of over 200 lives in deadly attacks.
“We pleaded that the President should show leadership and visit Benue and Niger States in the spirit of deep national mourning, to offer compassion and solidarity to families torn apart by the senseless massacre of over 200 innocent Nigerians in Benue State and flooding that killed a similar number in Niger State,” Obi wrote.
He lamented that the President’s demeanour and choice of attire did not reflect the gravity of the situation.
“The President arrived not in mourning cloth but in celebratory agbada attire, like it was an occasion for joy,” Obi said.
The former Anambra governor also faulted the Benue State Government’s decision to declare a public holiday for the visit, claiming it was used for fanfare rather than sober reflection or prayer.
Obi’s remarks have sparked renewed public debate on the government’s handling of the Benue tragedy and its response to national crises.
