Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has offered rare insights into his relationship with fellow icon Lionel Messi, ahead of Portugal’s highly anticipated UEFA Nations League final clash with Spain on Sunday.
For over 15 years, Ronaldo and Messi have remained at the heart of global football discourse. Their unparalleled dominance has not only shaped the modern era of the sport but also eclipsed the achievements of many other greats. Between them, they’ve claimed an astonishing 13 Ballon d’Or titles—further testament to their consistency and excellence at the highest level.
Now aged 39 and 40 respectively, Ronaldo and Messi continue to make headlines—not just for their performances on the pitch, but also for being among the top earners in football and across all sports.
In a conversation ahead of the Nations League final, Ronaldo addressed various topics, including his personal rapport with Messi. According to Alfremartinezz and shared by renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Portuguese forward humorously recalled a moment when he had to step in as a translator for Messi.
Ronaldo said that Messi “does not speak good English,” and reminisced about the time he helped translate for the former Barcelona captain during a gala event. He went on to emphasize the mutual respect that exists between them.
He stated, “Of course I have affection for Leo Messi. We’ve been on stage together for 15 years. I remember translating English for him at the Galas because he didn’t speak English well. He always treated me well and respected me.”
Despite the media-driven rivalry that has often framed their careers, Ronaldo’s words reflect a bond built on years of shared experiences, admiration, and respect between two of football’s greatest ever players.
