Popular Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, professionally known as Simi, has shared her candid thoughts on the increasing trend of established musicians launching their own record labels to sign up-and-coming talents.
In a recent conversation with VJ Adams, the singer expressed concern that many artists treat signing others as more of a status symbol than a genuine commitment to nurturing talent.
“I can sign an artist, but I think it’s not fair when an artist signs another artist just as a milestone. For them, it’s just a passion project, not something they’re deeply committed to achieving.”
Simi emphasized that managing another artist’s career shouldn’t be taken lightly, adding that music business is not just about passion—it requires dedication, strategy, and resilience.
“Only people who truly have a passion for the music business should be signing artists. Because when things don’t go as planned, will they still believe in that artist? Will they still push them?”
Reflecting on her own journey in the industry, Simi noted how important it was for her to be signed by someone who genuinely saw and believed in her vision, not just someone ticking a box.
“That’s someone’s life, their dream. If I ever sign someone, I’d want to be sure I have the energy and drive to see it through, because it’s a lot.”
Simi’s honest take serves as a thoughtful reminder that mentorship in the music industry should be purposeful and people-centered, not performative.
