President Bola Tinubu has officially cancelled his planned nationwide broadcast for Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day anniversary, opting instead to deliver his address directly from the chambers of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
The announcement was made on Wednesday via a statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, who noted that the change was necessary as the president will participate in a special joint session of the legislature.
Despite this adjustment, all other scheduled Democracy Day activities remain unaffected.
The presidency also cancelled the traditional military parade, though no specific reason was given for this omission.
According to the revised itinerary:
-
12:00 p.m. – President Tinubu’s address at the National Assembly.
-
4:00 p.m. – A public lecture titled “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms” will be held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. Attendance is limited to accredited State House correspondents.
Democracy Day commemorates Nigeria’s return to civilian rule and is typically marked by speeches, military parades, and national celebrations.
