Renowned Nigerian rapper Jude Abaga, popularly known as MI Abaga has opened up about his past political stance, admitting that he made a mistake by supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2015 general elections.
In a candid conversation on a recent episode of the Menism podcast, the “African Rapper NO 1” hitmaker reflected on his decision to back the APC, stating that he initially believed the party represented a fresh start from what he perceived as a corrupt Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration.
“I tweeted about the thing [herdsmen attacks] that happened in Benue and a lot of people were saying, ‘But MI Abaga you supported the APC,’” he recalled. “Yes, I supported APC because at that time, I felt that the PDP government was very corrupt. I was part of the people who lifted my voice to say, ‘Let us stand and bring in democracy.’”
However, nearly a decade later, M.I admits the APC has not lived up to the expectations he had when he voiced his support for them.
“As human being, no matter how much you try to be right, you will be wrong [sometimes]. APC unfortunately isn’t the APC of my dreams,” he said.
Now, the award-winning rapper is shifting his focus away from politics and toward nation-building through his art. MI Abaga revealed that his current mission is to use his talent and platform to work alongside fellow Nigerian youths in building a better country.
MI Abaga’s remarks add to the growing list of public figures who have expressed disillusionment with the current political landscape, especially as Nigeria faces rising economic and security challenges.
His reflections serve as a reminder of the complex relationship between celebrity influence, political engagement, and public accountability.
