Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has sparked online conversations after awarding N250,000 each to several graduates who achieved first-class honours.
The 37-year-old music star announced on Thursday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, writing:
“If you graduated with First class, post your transcripts.”
The post quickly gained traction as numerous graduates uploaded their academic transcripts and certificates. Adekunle Gold began selecting some of the respondents and credited them with N250,000 each.
One grateful recipient shared her testimony online, revealing she had just N1,700 in her account when the singer reached out to her.
While many applauded Adekunle Gold for promoting academic excellence, others criticised the initiative for being exclusive. One user questioned, “So na only first-class students dey listen to your songs?” Another suggested a more structured process: “You for create form instead of using this your timeline wey full already.”
Some also expressed concerns that scammers might misuse the posted transcripts and certificates.
Known for his philanthropic efforts, Adekunle Gold—whose real name is Adekunle Kosoko—has consistently supported youth empowerment.
In 2022, he launched the 5 Star Care Programme through his foundation to provide aid to individuals with sickle cell disease, a condition he personally lives with.
The singer, who is married to fellow artiste Simi, shares a daughter with her. Despite the backlash, he has not responded publicly, and his gesture remains a trending topic across social media.
