Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, visited Daura, Katsina State, to console the family of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.
Buhari, Nigeria’s former military Head of State and two-term civilian President, died at a private clinic in London after a prolonged illness. His passing has sparked nationwide mourning, with tributes pouring in from world leaders, Nigerian politicians, and citizens alike.
Final Journey Home
Buhari’s body was flown back to Nigeria on Tuesday aboard a government aircraft accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.
He was received at Katsina Airport by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside a federal government delegation, before being transported to Daura for burial.
By Islamic rites, the late president was laid to rest the same day. His funeral included full military honors, including a 21-gun salute, as a mark of respect for his service to the nation.
Akpabio Leads National Assembly Tribute
During his condolence visit, Senate President Akpabio expressed his deep sorrow over the passing of the elder statesman. He described Buhari as a patriotic leader who dedicated his life to nation-building, integrity, and public service.
“President Muhammadu Buhari was not just a leader; he was an institution. His contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and fight against corruption will never be forgotten,” Akpabio said.
He also prayed for comfort for the Buhari family and urged Nigerians to honor the legacy of the late president by upholding the values he stood for—discipline, honesty, and national unity.
