International human rights lawyer Amal Clooney has opened up about her efforts to protect her family’s privacy, revealing that she enforces a strict no-phone policy in her home to safeguard her children from public exposure.
Amal, 47, and her husband, Hollywood icon George Clooney, 64, are parents to eight-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander, and live a quiet life in the English countryside, far removed from the spotlight their careers naturally attract.
“I Take Everyone’s Phones Away”
In a recent interview with Glamour, Amal explained how she and George have taken steps to create private spaces in an increasingly public world. One of those measures? A phone basket at their home’s entrance.
“Creating private moments and spaces is becoming increasingly difficult,” Amal said. “But that’s also why we entertain a lot at home. I now have a phone basket that I use to take everyone’s phones away!”
She emphasized that the decision wasn’t just about adult privacy but primarily about minimizing exposure for their children.
“Becoming a parent means you’re more troubled by some of the intrusions,” she said. “We don’t put our children out there, we’ve never put their photo out there or anything like that.”
George Clooney: “We Deal With Very Serious Bad Guys”
George Clooney has long voiced concerns about paparazzi intrusion and the safety risks it poses, particularly due to Amal’s involvement in high-profile legal cases involving dangerous individuals and regimes.
Speaking to GQ in August during a joint interview with Brad Pitt, the actor explained the intense level of fame he endures and why protecting his kids is a priority.
“There’s, I dunno, five or six of us where it’s just never subsided,” George said. “I have a goal of trying to protect—I don’t want pictures of my kids.”
“We deal in very serious subject matters, with very serious bad guys, and we don’t want to have photos of our kids out there. So we have to work hard at trying to stay private, and it’s tricky, as you can imagine.”
Privacy Over Publicity
The Clooneys have consistently maintained that their children’s privacy is non-negotiable. Unlike many celebrity couples, they’ve never shared images of their kids online or allowed media access to family moments.
Their efforts reflect a broader concern in today’s digital age: the erosion of personal boundaries, especially for public figures with children.
Ongoing Challenges
Amal’s privacy strategy comes amid other challenges, including rumors in April 2025 that she could be barred from returning to the U.S. under a policy reportedly proposed by Donald Trump, targeting several top UK lawyers for their human rights advocacy.
