Award-winning Afro-Soul singer Berita, real name Gugulethu Khumalo, has finally broken her silence about her highly publicised split from controversial music executive Nota Baloyi.
In an emotional sit-down on The Voice with Palesa, the 34-year-old singer reflected on the breakdown of their once-promising marriage and how social media fame and clashing personalities led to its collapse.
“We Built a Private Relationship, a Good One” — Berita
Berita and Nota tied the knot in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown, and for a while, they seemed like a solid pair, both in love and in work. Notably, she even assisted in producing her fan-favourite album Songs in the Key of Love.
“We built a private relationship, a good one… he helped with my album, and we supported each other,” Berita said.
However, their private life began to unravel as Nota’s public presence grew, often making bold and controversial statements online.
“He Decided He Wanted to Be a Critic”
While Berita preferred a low-profile lifestyle, Nota became increasingly outspoken on social media — a shift that Berita says deeply affected her emotionally and professionally.
“I thought, ‘If this is who you are, go ahead.’ But then people started saying, ‘This guy talks too much,’ and it began to affect me,” she explained.
She revealed that her concerns were dismissed when she tried addressing the impact of his online persona on their marriage.
“He told me if his words online affect me, that’s not his problem,” she shared.
Marriage Ended in 2022
Their marriage ended in 2022, just two years after they wed. Since then, Berita has focused on healing, rebuilding her life, and reclaiming her voice.
“You marry someone thinking you know them, then they develop a new personality… It’s fine until that personality starts harming you,” she said.
“I Feel Free. I Feel Happy.”
Berita says she’s in a better space now, both emotionally and professionally.
“I’m so excited to be back doing what I love. I feel free. I feel happy. I chose me, and it’s working out.”
