Nigerian actor and rapper Efa Iwara has opened up about a lifelong struggle with stammering and how it nearly derailed his dreams of becoming an entertainer.
Speaking during an interview on #WithChude, hosted by Chude Jideonwo, Efa revealed that he was born with a speech impediment that made communication extremely difficult for him growing up.
“I was born a stammerer,” he said.
“My elder brother had to coach me through basic conversations. He’d tell me, ‘Take your time, breathe, think about what you want to say before you say it.’”
Despite the early challenge, Efa’s persistence led him first into music and eventually into acting, where he has built a successful career with standout roles in top-rated series.
From Ibadan Rapper to Netflix Star
Efa began his entertainment journey as a rapper in Ibadan before transitioning into acting. He has since featured in popular series such as The Men’s Club, Ajoche, and Rumour Has It.
However, it was his powerful performance as investigative journalist Dapo Banjo in King of Boys: The Return of the King that earned him widespread recognition. The limited Netflix series, directed by Kemi Adetiba, was released in 2021 and served as a sequel to her 2018 blockbuster.
“Her energy, her drive, is enviable. And her creativity is out of this world,” Efa said about working with Adetiba during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It was magical.”
2Baba’s Encouragement After Stage Setback
Efa also recounted a particularly low point in his music career when a live performance was abruptly halted due to a faulty CD.
“It was embarrassing,” he admitted.
“But after that moment, 2Baba came up to me and gave me a brief word of encouragement that lifted my spirits.”
That encouragement would become a pivotal moment, helping him push forward in an industry known for its highs and lows.
Today, Efa Iwara Is an Inspiration
Now regarded as one of Nigeria’s rising actors, Efa’s journey from battling a stammer to starring in critically acclaimed productions serves as an inspiring story for anyone facing personal obstacles.
