Popular content creator Kuye Adegoke, widely known as Egungun of Lagos, is facing criticism over a birthday tribute to his wife, Pashotah, that many say crossed the line.
To mark her birthday on Wednesday, Egungun took to Instagram to share a throwback story—one that sparked mixed reactions rather than celebration.
In his post, he recalled a time 10 years ago when he nearly arranged for his wife to meet a wealthy friend at a hotel for ₦3,000, unaware that she would later become his life partner.
“10 years ago I wanted to link you up with my friend wey get money pass me 🤣… honestly I’m a mumu I no no say na you I go still marry,” he wrote.
The birthday message was met with swift backlash from social media users, who called the post tone-deaf, disrespectful, and unnecessary.
One user wrote, “You were going to hook her up with another dude for money, as per se she be what? Are you sure you are okay? This caption not necessary at all man.”
Another said, “You keep embarrassing this your wife in subtle ways and you don’t even realize it.”
However, some fans defended the skit maker, urging people not to overanalyze what they saw as a light-hearted and honest post.
“It’s not what you guys think… Happy birthday beautiful lady,” one commenter wrote.
Another joked in Yoruba, “Story Agbako wo re bayi 😂😂 Happy birthday iyawo jare ❤️❤️ wa pe laye.”
Egungun and Pashotah have shared a long journey, from their engagement in March 2024, marked by a widely celebrated proposal, to the birth of their first child in March 2025.
While the creator is known for his bold humor and street interviews, many fans believe that public tributes, especially those to a spouse, deserve greater sensitivity and respect.
Whether the post was a misguided attempt at humor or simply poorly timed honesty, it has certainly sparked conversations about how personal stories are shared on social media, especially when a loved one is involved.
