Popular American television host Ellen DeGeneres has revealed the reason behind her recent move from the United States to the United Kingdom.
Speaking during a live conversation with Richard Bacon at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire—near her new home in the Cotswolds—Ellen shared that what was originally planned as a short stay turned into a permanent relocation.
According to the 66-year-old comedian and talk show icon, she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, had initially planned to spend just three to four months a year in the UK. However, everything changed following Donald Trump’s victory in the November 2024 U.S. presidential election.
“We arrived the day before the election, woke up to crying emojis from friends and I knew he won,” Ellen said, describing the moment she realized Trump had won.
She further explained that the political climate in the U.S., especially the growing threats to LGBTQ+ rights, played a key role in their decision. Ellen voiced concerns about attempts to reverse same-sex marriage and rollback other civil liberties.
Her remarks have sparked a widespread online discussion, with many praising her courage and transparency.
