FCT NULGE Suspends Three-Month Strike After Wike’s Intervention, Orders Workers to Resume July 15

FCT NULGE Suspends Three-Month Strike

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, has suspended its three-month-old strike action following the intervention of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

In a statement issued late Monday, July 14, 2025, the union directed all its members across the six area councils to resume work from midnight, Tuesday, July 15.

The decision to suspend the strike followed Wike’s directive to use 10 per cent of the Area Councils’ Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to settle three months of salary arrears owed to local government workers.

This latest move comes shortly after Wike also facilitated the payment of FCT primary school teachers, leading to the suspension of their 100-day strike last week.

“The union’s State Executive Council meeting, held on July 14, 2025, at the State Secretariat in Gwagwalada, Abuja, resolved to suspend the strike after exhaustive deliberations and appeals from the FCT Minister, the FCT Traditional Council, and other key stakeholders,” the FCT NULGE Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Kabi, said in a statement.

Special Committee to Resolve Salary Arrears

The union confirmed that it will work with a special committee constituted by the FCT Minister to harmonise all outstanding payments, including wage adjustments and allowances, within two weeks.

“The union will collaborate with the minister’s special committee to harmonise all outstanding arrears within two weeks, with a view to presenting a holistic resolution through the House Committee on FCT and other relevant platforms,” the statement added.

NULGE to Pursue Additional Demands

Comrade Kabi further stated that NULGE will continue to engage Area Council Chairmen on pending issues affecting staff welfare, including:

  • 40% Peculiar Allowance

  • Salary adjustments under CONHESS/CONMESS and CONPSS

  • N35,000 wage award

  • Unremitted pension deductions

  • Promotion arrears and other entitlements

“We remain committed to sustaining industrial peace and harmony in the FCT and will intensify negotiations to secure all outstanding welfare packages for our members,” Kabi noted.

Appreciation to Stakeholders

The union extended its gratitude to Minister Wike, the FCT Traditional Council, the National Assembly House Committee on FCT, and other stakeholders for their role in resolving the labour dispute. It also thanked the general public and union members for their support and patience during the strike period.
