Marc Cucurella Recalls Feeling “Scared” as Donald Trump Gatecrashed Chelsea’s Club World Cup Trophy Ceremony
Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has revealed he was left terrified when former US President Donald Trump awkwardly lingered on stage during the club’s FIFA Club World Cup trophy ceremony.
The incident occurred after Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final, and Trump had been invited to present the trophy to the team.
Speaking in an interview with Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, Cucurella said the players were informed they had to wait until Trump exited the stage before lifting the trophy—but the former president refused to leave.
“We had been told Trump would come to present us with the trophy and that we couldn’t lift it until he left,” Cucurella recalled.
“And of course, we were all there waiting for him to leave, but the guy didn’t want to leave.”
According to the Spanish full-back, Trump insisted on staying among the squad during the celebrations while Reece James held the trophy.
“We looked at him and he said, ‘Get him up, I’ll stay here, and so on.’
And I wondered who would say anything to him, you know… I was scared s***less!”
The surreal moment sparked both confusion and discomfort among the Chelsea squad as they navigated the unexpected cameo by the former U.S. leader during their moment of glory.
