Nigerian footballer Odion Ighalo has sparked conversation across social media after addressing a deeply rooted cultural issue that many successful Africans face — family entitlement to wealth.
In a candid statement, the former Manchester United striker drew a stark comparison between how wealth is perceived in Western countries versus Africa. Referring to global football icons, he said:
“For Ronaldo and Messi, their money belongs to them. If they don’t give it to their siblings or relatives, no one gets angry. But in Africa, it’s different — once you start making money, your entire family feels entitled to it, even your brothers.”
The remark has struck a nerve, particularly among African youth and professionals who often face immense financial pressure from extended family members once they begin to earn well.
Ighalo’s comments highlight a recurring issue where personal success is sometimes seen not just as an achievement, but as a shared asset — a burden that can become emotionally and financially draining.
