Nigerian Sprinter Imaobong Uko Slams AFN Over Suspension

Imaobong Uko

Nigerian 400m sprinter Imaobong Uko has accused the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) of negligence and systemic corruption following her two-year suspension by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for whereabouts failures.

In a scathing public statement, Imaobong Uko said her ban was the result of a “flawed system and a corrupt federation” that abandoned her during a critical period.

She alleged that despite repeatedly reaching out for help to update her whereabouts—a requirement for athletes subject to doping controls—she was met with excuses, poor communication, and outright silence from key AFN officials.

“For months, I struggled with an online system meant to report my whereabouts,” Imaobong Uko stated.

“Despite reaching out repeatedly for help, I was met with endless excuses about network issues and told to wait. My messages often went unanswered, leaving me feeling abandoned by the very organization that is supposed to protect and support athletes.”

Imaobong Uko revealed that during her AIU hearing, she questioned AFN officials about their failure to assist her but was met with vague responses. They claimed she had submitted incorrect information—an accusation she firmly denies.

She named several federation officials, including Mbachi Louis, Mrs. Onos, and Assistant Secretary Taldang, as those who failed to provide support when she needed it most.

“Mrs. Onos ignored my messages until the day of my hearing, and even then didn’t follow through. Taldang promised to help but never came through. The neglect was shocking,” she said.

The 20-year-old athlete, who has represented Nigeria on the international stage since her teenage years, said the experience left her devastated and isolated, accusing the AFN of not only neglect but corruption.

“This situation has exposed the corruption and negligence within the federation that is supposed to champion our rights as athletes. I refuse to remain silent while they misuse their power and undermine our careers,” she added.

Imaobong Uko’s statement concluded with a passionate call for reform and solidarity among Nigerian athletes.

“Let’s unite to expose these injustices and fight for a fairer future in sports. Together, we can make a difference,” she urged.

Her claims add to a growing chorus of concerns about the governance of athletics in Nigeria, with many calling for greater transparency, accountability, and athlete welfare reforms within the AFN.
