In a major transfer twist, Spanish giants Barcelona have secured the loan of Marcus Rashford from Manchester United, with an option to buy the England international permanently. The forward will remain at Camp Nou until June 30, 2026, marking a new chapter in his career after falling out of favour at Old Trafford.
According to an official statement from Barcelona:
“Barcelona and Manchester United have reached a deal for the loan of the player Marcus Rashford until June 30, 2026. The agreement also establishes an option to buy the English forward.”
Financial Details & Wage Structure
Spanish reports reveal that Barcelona will pay around 75 percent of Rashford’s £325,000-per-week wage (approximately $435,000), while the 27-year-old will forego the remaining portion of his salary.
Rashford’s Decline at United
Rashford has struggled to reclaim form in recent seasons and was notably sidelined under current United boss Ruben Amorim, who openly questioned the forward’s commitment and professionalism. He spent the latter half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa, scoring four goals in 17 appearances before a hamstring injury ended his campaign prematurely in April.
Barcelona’s Interest & Tactical Fit
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick had previously expressed admiration for both Rashford and Liverpool’s Luis Díaz, indicating the club’s desire to bolster its left-wing options. With Nico Williams opting to stay at Athletic Bilbao, Barca turned their attention to Rashford.
While Raphinha and breakout star Lamine Yamal dazzled last season en route to a domestic treble, Barcelona lacked depth on the flanks. Rashford’s versatility allows him to cover both wings and serve as potential backup to veteran striker Robert Lewandowski, who turns 37 in August.

Controversy & Criticism
Rashford’s decision to push for the Barcelona move drew criticism from former United striker Teddy Sheringham, who stated:
“From my perspective, if you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that’s a step up that he hasn’t deserved.”
Barcelona’s Financial Challenges
Despite their successful season, Barcelona still face La Liga salary cap restrictions and financial balancing acts. They had issues registering players last season, including Dani Olmo, and now must ensure both Rashford and their first summer signing, goalkeeper Joan Garcia, can be registered without breaching regulations.
British Players at Barcelona: A Rare Sight
Only a handful of British players have made the leap to Barcelona in recent decades. Notable names include Gary Lineker, Mark Hughes, and Steve Archibald in the 1980s. More recently:
-
Marcus McGuane joined the reserves in 2018 and made one first-team appearance.
-
Louie Barry moved to the academy in 2019 but left for Aston Villa months later.
What’s Next for United?
Manchester United are reportedly preparing to offload several more players this summer, including Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho, as part of Amorim’s squad overhaul.
