2024 WAFCON: “Super Falcons Won Because Peter Obi Stayed Away” — Reno Omokri

“Super Falcons Win Because Peter Obi Stayed Away” — Reno Omokri Sparks Outrage with Bold WAFCON Claim

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has once again sparked debate on social media after linking the Super Falcons’ victory in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final to the absence of Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Following Nigeria’s 3-2 win over host nation Morocco on Saturday, July 26, Omokri took to his verified X (formerly Twitter) account to attribute part of the Falcons’ success to what he described as the “positive impact” of Obi not being at the match.

“Thank God Peter Obi did not attend the WAFCON final. That is how he would have distracted the Super Falcons, like he did to the Super Eagles during the World Cup qualifying match at Uyo,” Omokri posted on Sunday.

Omokri referenced Nigeria’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in the March 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which he previously blamed on Obi’s stadium presence.

Reno Omokri went further, accusing Obi of politicizing sports and questioned his legacy as former Governor of Anambra State, saying he never invested in world-class sports infrastructure:

“A man who could not build a stadium capable of hosting a FIFA match in Anambra for eight years wanting to go to a stadium built by Godswill Akpabio when he was Governor. If he really loved sports, why did he not show it when he was Governor?”

In a broader critique, Reno Omokri also took a swipe at Obi’s educational policy stances, saying:

“A fellow who could not build even a nursery school in his two terms as Governor is now advising the Federal Government about Dentistry students at various universities. What a contradiction!”

While Reno Omokri’s remarks have triggered heated responses online from Obi’s supporters and political neutrals alike, neither Peter Obi nor his media team has responded publicly to the claims as of the time of this report.
