The Plateau State House of Assembly has elected Hon. Nanloong Daniel as its new Speaker, following the voluntary resignation of Hon. Gabriel Dewan.
Daniel, who represents the Mikang State Constituency and previously served as the Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly, was unanimously chosen during an emergency sitting held on Wednesday at the Assembly’s temporary complex, situated at the Old Government House in Jos.
The session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Hon. Gwotta Ajang. It took place shortly after a closed-door meeting involving Governor Caleb Mutfwang, former Speaker Dewan, and other lawmakers, aimed at defusing rising political tensions in the state.
Hon. Dewan—who remains the only lawmaker from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 24-member legislature—stepped down as part of ongoing efforts to restore stability and foster unity within the state’s political framework.
His resignation cleared the path for Hon. Daniel to emerge as a consensus candidate, marking a new chapter for the Plateau State Assembly.
The legislature is expected to resume deliberations in the coming days to address pressing governance and legislative matters affecting the state.
