His early exposure to a diverse family environment fostered resilience and creativity. Seyi developed an interest in fashion during his youth, experimenting with designs and fabrics.
He pursued higher education at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in 1999. During his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) assignment in Akwa Ibom State in the early 2000s, he befriended local tailors, sparking his passion for sewing and fashion design.
Career
Oluwaseyi Adekunle, popularly known as Seyi Vodi, began his fashion career during his NYSC in Akwa Ibom, where he started sewing shirts and boxers for fellow corps members.
In 2001, he registered his business as Testimony Fabrics, rebranding it to Vodi in 2003 for a shorter, more African-inspired name, derived from a Fulani friend’s name, which means “beauty.” A pivotal moment came in 2002 when he failed a bank employment test, motivating him to pursue fashion full-time.
He briefly worked at a bank in 2003 but left to focus on his growing fashion business. Initially operating without a shop, Seyi sourced materials, sewed at home, and delivered garments to clients.
His dedication led to the establishment of the Vodi Group, which comprises Vodi Tailors, Vodi Clean (offering laundry and dry cleaning services), Vodi Training Institute (a fashion school), Vodi Debo, and Vodi Textile.
His designs, renowned for their vibrant African fabrics and contemporary styles, have attracted high-profile clients, including Nollywood stars such as Richard Mofe Damijo and Ayo Makun, musicians like Davido and Kizz Daniel, and political figures like Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima.
By 2017, Vodi was listed among Nigeria’s largest fashion labels, with over 100 outlets nationwide and exports to international markets.
The Vodi Training Institute mentors aspiring designers, and its fashion line emphasizes dimensional patterns and vertical structures to foster creativity.
