2027: Sule Lamido Says He Will Support Peter Obi if Coalition Picks Him

Sule Lamido Says He Will Support Peter Obi if Coalition Picks Him

Former Jigawa State Governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Sule Lamido has declared his readiness to support Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, if the former Anambra State governor emerges as the consensus candidate of the opposition coalition.

Lamido made the statement while addressing questions about the future of Nigeria’s political landscape and the growing momentum behind opposition unity ahead of the 2027 polls.

“If the coalition produces Peter Obi or anyone else committed to rescuing Nigeria, I will support them. But I remain PDP,” Lamido said.

The ex-governor emphasized that Nigeria must move beyond ethnic and regional politics, insisting that leadership should be based on competence and a clear national vision—not tribal affiliations.

“We should have outgrown tribal and regional sentiments. What has the North gained from producing the most presidents if the region remains underdeveloped?” he asked.

Lamido’s remarks come on the heels of renewed support for Peter Obi from the Middle Belt Forum, which recently hinted that it may back the Labour Party candidate in 2027.

The group praised Obi for his performance in the 2023 elections and his reputation for keeping promises—including his pledge to serve only one term if elected.

On the issue of zoning, Lamido reflected on its origins within the PDP, stating:

“Zoning was meant to be a healing mechanism, a temporary measure to restore trust after the June 12 annulment. But now, it has become an albatross.”

Lamido’s openness to a united opposition and a Peter Obi candidacy adds weight to ongoing conversations around building a strong coalition to challenge the ruling APC in 2027.
