Crystal Palace emerged victorious over Liverpool in this season’s Community Shield after a dramatic penalty shootout on Sunday.
Liverpool made an electric start, with debutant Hugo Ekitike finding the net just four minutes in. However, Crystal Palace quickly equalized when Ismaila Sarr was brought down in the box, allowing Jean-Philippe Mateta to calmly send Alisson Becker the wrong way from the penalty spot.
The Reds restored their lead almost immediately, as Jeremie Frimpong’s cross looped over Dean Henderson and into the goal.
Late in the game, Sarr broke through Liverpool’s defense to make it 2-2, forcing the match into penalties.
In the shootout, Henderson delivered a standout performance with several stunning saves, securing the win for the Eagles and adding the Community Shield to the FA Cup they had claimed earlier in the year.
